Bertrand Courtenay is an experienced lab technician and scientific writer specializing in chromatography, mass spectrometry, and other analytical instrumentation.
He received his BS in Biochemistry from UNSW Sydney, where he gained proficiency in using GC-MS, LC-MS, CE, and NMR spectroscopy during coursework and research projects. He got his Masters in Biochemistry from the University of California San Diego where he also attained his ASCP and CSMLS certifications while doing his masters in the US. He got his Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques to work as a full-time medical lab technician in Australia.
For the past 5 years, John has worked as a senior technician at HEALTHCARE IMAGING SERVICES (VICTORIA) PTY LIMITED, managing day-to-day operations of the LC-MS/MS and ICP-MS facilities. He enjoys keeping up with the latest advances in analytical science and emergent techniques like imaging mass spectrometry.
Bertrand has paraplegia due to a spinal cord injury, which means he has paralysis of his lower body and legs. He uses a wheelchair for mobility and independence and can fully engage in his work and daily life activities. His paraplegia does not affect his cognitive abilities or capacity to work as a skilled lab technician and writer. With workplace accommodations like wheelchair access, Bertrand manages his paraplegia while making important contributions to his company.
Bertrand has authored several articles and application notes centering on MS sample preparation, method development/validation, and metabolomics analyses. He also frequently presents webinars focused on applied aspects of mass spec operation and maintenance.
In his free time, he enjoys cooking, binging TV shows, and looking after his feline roommates.
